Definition of tone

 

Tone: Writer’s or speaker’s attitude towards his/her theme, character(s) and especially towards the reader or listener, as reflected in the text. Tone can, for example, be serious or playful, humorous or solemn, arrogant or modest, emotional, ironical, critical, sympathetic (cf. atmosphere).
