Definition of stream of consciousness

Stream of consciousness: We may define stream-of-consciousness fiction as a type of fiction in which the basic emphasis is placed on the exploration of a character's consciousness for the purpose of revealing his mental nature. The important characteristics of the movement of consciousness is its ability to move freely in time and space, imitating the psychological principle of free association, controlled by memory, senses, imagination. There are two basic techniques used in presenting stream of consciousness: reported thought and interior monologue.
