Definition of hawthorne effect
HAWTHORNE EFFECT: Subjects in an experiment or observation modify or change their behavior in response to the fact of being studied: Originally coined in a study of workers at the Hawthorne Works of Western Electric who improved their productivity when lighting conditions were changed: As this productivity increase occurred under several different lighting conditions, it was concluded that the increases in productivity were the result of being singled out and studied rather than the lighting itself
