Definition of built-in (automatic) stabilizers
built-in (automatic) stabilizers : programs that react to changes in the business cycle without additional government action, increasing government's budget deficit (or reducing its surplus) during a recession and increasing government's budget surplus (or reducing its deficit) during inflation. Unemployment insurance is one such program.
