Trade-off
Glossary of business
Definition of trade-off
A trade-off is when one thing has to be sacrificed in order to obtain something else. When there is a trade-off this means that there is an opportunity cost. To get one thing something else has to be given up. For example, there was always thought to be a trade-off between unemployment and inflation. To get lower unemployment, it was thought that governments had to accept higher inflation.
