Definition of retail price index
The Retail Price Index is the main measure of inflation in the UK. It shows the amount that the prices in an average basket of goods have changed. Price changes are weighted to reflect the importance of each price change. The weights are worked out from the Family Expenditure Survey which is a survey of the pattern of spending by households.
