Definition of hawthorne effect
The Hawthorne effect was identified from a series of studies carried out at the Hawthorne Plant of the Western Electric Company in Chicago between 1927 and 1932. The studies noticed that whatever changes were made in the working conditions over the five years (including a return to the original conditions), output always rose. They therefore concluded that the increases in output were simply due to the team working together better and not related to changes in working conditions - it is this that is termed as the 'Hawthorne effect'.
