Definition of equities

 

Equities is another word for shares. It refers to the ordinary shares of a company. Having an ordinary share means that you own a proportion of that company, and that you have a vote at their annual general meeting. The number of votes you have depends on the number of shares you own, and the amount of control those votes give you depend on the proportion of the shares you own.
